We often hear about our chakra centers and their importance to our spiritual development, but where are they? What do they do? What does it mean to have a blocked chakra? As a Spiritual Life Coach, I work with chakra centers to support my clients in their personal, spiritual, and energetic development. 


Chakras are an ancient concept deeply rooted in Eastern spiritual practices mainly Hinduism and Buddhism. The word chakra is from Sanskrit, meaning  “discs” or “wheels”. Our chakra centers are located along the spine column, which governs different aspects of our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.


 There are seven major chakras located at specific points along the spine. (There are some disciplines that mentioned 10, 12, 15, or 100s of chakra centers, we will focus on the 7 main chakras within the human body.)


Each of the seven main chakras has unique characteristics, and keeping them balanced is key to maintaining your overall well-being. Even if just one or more chakras are blocked, or out of alignment, you might experience physical, mental, or emotional distress.  Locating and understanding these seven chakras can help you achieve balance, inner peace, and overall peaceful well-being.

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)


Location: Base of the spine, near the tailbone

Element: Earth

The Muladhara, or the root Chakra, is the first chakra that closely signifies your sense of stability, survival, and groundedness in this physical world. It represents the foundation of your being—both physically and metaphorically. 


This chakra is associated with basic needs like food, shelter, safety, and emotional security. When your root chakra is balanced, you feel stable, grounded, and secure. You have a strong sense of belonging and a deep connection to the Mother Earth.

Signs of an Imbalanced Root Chakra:


  • Feeling anxious, fearful, or insecure

  • Physical issues like lower back pain or digestive problems.

 

How to Balance the Muladhaar or Root Chakra:


Balancing the Muladhara, or Root Chakra, is key to feeling grounded, secure, and stable in this physical human experience. As the foundation of your energy system, the root chakra influences your sense of safety, stability, and connection to the physical world.


We have listed effective techniques to balance and strengthen your root chakra, helping you build a solid foundation.


  • Practice grounding exercises, such as walking barefoot on the earth

  • Meditate while visualizing a red light at the base of your spine

  • Use affirmations like “I trust the process of life,” "I am safe", and "I am grounded"

  • Incorporate grounding foods into your diet, such as root vegetables

  • Work with grounding crystals like hematite or red jasper


2.  Svadhisthana or Sacral Chakra


Location: Just below the navel, in the lower abdomen

Color: Orange

Element: Water

Action: ‘I Feel’

Chant: Vam

Significance: Emotions, creativity, and sexuality


The Svadisthana, or sacral chakra, governs your emotions, creativity, and sexuality. This chakra is all about pleasure, desire, and emotional connection.


When this chakra is balanced, you feel open to new experiences, creative, easily able to express and connect with others, and overall have a sense of emotional stability. It also determines your ability to experience joy and pleasure in life.


Signs of a Balanced Sacral Chakra:


  • Healthy emotional expression

  • A strong sense of creativity and imagination

  • Enjoyment of life’s pleasures

  • Healthy relationships, and sexual energy


Signs of an Imbalanced Sacral Chakra:


  • Emotional instability, such as mood swings or feeling numb

  • Creative blockages or lack of inspiration

  • Guilt or shame about sexuality

  • Codependent relationships, or lack of intimacy.


How to Balance the Sacral Chakra?


The Sacral Chakra, or Svadhisthana, governs our emotions, creativity, and sense of pleasure. When balanced, it enhances emotional well-being, creativity, and healthy relationships. However, when blocked or imbalanced, it can lead to feelings of insecurity, emotional instability, or a lack of creativity.


To balance the Sacral Chakra, focus on creative and expressive techniques such as:


  • Practice creative expression, such as painting, dancing, or writing

  • Meditate while visualizing an orange light in your lower abdomen

  • Use affirmations like "I deserve pleasure”, “I trust my emotions” and "I am creative"

  • Incorporate water-related activities, such as swimming or taking baths to heal through water connection

  • Incorporate crystals like carnelian or orange calcite

 

 3. Manipura or Solar Plexus Chakra


Location: Upper abdomen, just above the navel

Color: Yellow

Element: Fire

Action: "I do"

Mantra: Ram

Significance: Confidence, personal power, and willpower


The Manipura or Solar Plexus Chakra is responsible for your personal power, confidence, and self-esteem. This chakra governs your willpower, decision-making, and ability to assert yourself in the world.


When the solar plexus chakra is balanced, you feel empowered, confident, and able to take charge of your life.


Signs of a Balanced Solar Plexus Chakra:


  • Strong sense of self-worth and confidence

  • A healthy sense of personal power

  • Motivation and focus to achieve goals

  • Ability to set boundaries


Signs of an Imbalanced Solar Plexus Chakra: 


  • Low self-esteem or feelings of inadequacy

  • Lack of motivation or procrastination

  • Difficulty making decisions or setting boundaries

  • Aggression controlling behavior or difficulty setting boundaries.


How to Balance the Solar Plexus Chakra?


The Solar Plexus Chakra, or Manipura, is the center of your personal power, confidence, and self-esteem. When balanced, it fosters a strong sense of purpose, motivation, and inner strength. However, an imbalance can manifest as low self-confidence, lack of direction, or emotional instability.


To gain balance in your Solar Plexus Chakra and feel your personal power:


  • Engage in physical activities that build strength, such as yoga or martial arts

  • Meditate while visualizing a yellow light in your solar plexus area

  • Practice self-empowerment activities, such as setting goals or learning new skills

  • Use affirmations like “I can achieve my goals”, "I am powerful," and "I am confident"

  • Tap into the power of crystals like citrine or tiger’s eye


4. The Anahata or Heart Chakra


Location: Centre of the chest, near the heart

Colour: Green

Element: Air

Action: "I love"

Chant: Yam

Significance: Love, compassion, and relationships


The Anhata, or Heart Chakra, acts as the bridge between the lower and upper chakras and is the center for love, compassion, and emotional healing. This chakra governs your ability to give and receive love, not only in relationships but also in terms of self-love and kindness to others.


A balanced heart chakra allows for empathy, forgiveness, and deep connections with others.


Signs of a Balanced Heart Chakra:


  • Ability to love and be loved

  • Forgiveness and acceptance,

  • Compassion and empathy for others

  • Emotional balance and harmony


Signs of an Imbalanced Heart Chakra:


  • Feelings of jealousy or possessiveness

  • Holding onto grudges or resentment

  • Difficulty trusting others or forming relationships

  • Emotional coldness or detachment


How to Balance the Heart Chakra:


The Heart Chakra, or Anahata, is the center of love, compassion, and emotional balance. When it’s open and balanced, you feel a deep connection to others, self-love, and inner peace. However, when blocked, it can lead to feelings of loneliness, resentment, or emotional detachment.


Here are some effective ways to balance the Heart Chakra:


  • Meditate while visualizing a green light in your heart center

  • Engage in acts of kindness or volunteer work

  • Practice loving-kindness meditation (Metta)

  • Use affirmations like “I am worthy of love”, “I am open to love" and "I forgive myself and others"

  • Connect with crystals like rose quartz or green aventurine


5. The Vishuddha or Throat Chakra


Location: Throat area

Color: Blue

Element: Ether (Space)

Action: "I speak"

Chant: Ham

Meaning: Truth, self-expression and truth


The Vishudha or Throat Chakra is associated with communication, authentic self-expression, and truth. It governs your ability to express your thoughts and feelings clearly.


When the throat chakra is balanced, you can speak clearly, listen actively, and express yourself with honesty and integrity.


Signs of a Balanced Throat Chakra:


  • Ability to speak your truth

  • Confidence in expressing ideas and emotions

  • Clear and effective communication

  • Active listening and empathy in conversations


Signs of an Imbalanced Throat Chakra:


Difficulty articulating thoughts or emotions

Talking too much or too little

Fear of speaking or expressing yourself

Lying or being inauthentic


How to Balance the Throat Chakra?


The Throat Chakra, or Vishuddha, is the center of communication, self-expression, and truth. When balanced, it allows you to express yourself clearly, speak your truth, and listen with understanding. An imbalance in the Throat Chakra can lead to difficulties in communication, fear of speaking up, or even physical issues like sore throats.


Here are some effective ways to balance the Throat Chakra:


  • Practice vocal exercises or singing

  • Meditate while visualizing a blue light in your throat area

  • Use affirmations like “My voice matters”, "I speak my truth" and "I express myself clearly and confidently"

  • Practice active listening and engage in honest conversations

  • Find comfort with crystals like lapis lazuli or aquamarine

 

 

6. The Ajna or Third Eye Chakra


Location: Forehead, between the eyebrows

Color: Indigo

Element: Light

Action: “I see”

Chant: Om

Signifies: Wisdom, intuition, and insight


The Ajna or Third Eye chakra is the center of intuition, insight, and wisdom. It governs your ability to see beyond the physical world and tap into your inner wisdom and higher consciousness.


When your third eye chakra is balanced, you experience clarity, focus, and a heightened sense of intuition.

7. The Sahasrara or Crown Chakra


Location: Top of the head

Color: Violet or white

Element: Consciousness

Action: "I understand."

Chant: Silence

Signifies: Enlightenment, consciousness, and Spiritual connection with the Universe


The Sahasrara or Crown chakra is the highest chakra and is associated with spiritual connection, enlightenment, and universal consciousness. It represents your connection to the divine, higher self, and the universe. It also helps you to reduce over-attachment to the physical world.


When the crown chakra is balanced, you feel a sense of oneness, spiritual awareness, and inner peace.


Signs of a Balanced Crown Chakra:


  • Inner peace and clarity

  • Strong sense of spiritual connection and purpose

  • Wisdom and understanding

  • Open-mindedness and awareness of the bigger picture


Signs of an Imbalanced Crown Chakra:


  • Lack of meaning or purpose in life

  • Feeling disconnected from spirituality or a higher purpose

  • Close-mindedness or rigid beliefs

  • Excessive attachment to the material world.


How to Balance the Crown Chakra?


The Crown Chakra, or Sahasrara, is the center of spiritual connection, consciousness, and enlightenment. When balanced, it fosters a deep sense of peace, unity with the universe, and higher awareness. An imbalanced Crown Chakra can result in feelings of disconnection, confusion, or a lack of purpose.


Here are some effective ways to balance the Crown Chakra:


  • Meditate while visualizing a violet or white light at the top of your head

  • Practice meditation, spiritual contemplation, and gratitude

  • Use affirmations like "I am connected to the divine" and "I trust the universe"

  • Spend time in nature or engage in activities that inspire

  • Work with crystals like clear quartz or selenite
